Magnesium Sulfate commonly causes an orangish tinge to single fingernails. Keep away from household cleaning supplies and cod liver oil for a couple weeks and it'll gradually disappear.

How do you get finger nail polish last more then one day?
Reapply a clear polish over every other day and make sure you get the tips of your nails (the very top and behind you nail that is showing) as that is were the nail polish starts to wear off.How do you get finger nail polish last more then one day?

put on a clear coat over the top... there is also a product to put on before you paint your nails which helps it last longer. don't buff your nails before you put on polish because that makes it come off faster. OPI is a good brand to use!

Do one layer of nail polish, then a second and finally use a good clear coat and make sure you let them dry completely. Works every time.

How could I stop ripping/tearing off my finger nails?
When I go online and I read essays or long things like that I always have to keep tearing off my nail from my left index finger. I can't stop and my nail is very short and I just keep doing it. Help! I bite off the skin around my finger nails!?
I know its gross and horrible, and I want to stop but I can't - I bite off the skin around my fingernails. What I do is clasp the skin in my teeth and just rip. I notice myself doing it when I'm nervous or when something stresses me out. I've just done it because something stressed me out and now I'm really regretting it because I have hurt my finger (made it sore). I'm a 16 year old girl and I want nice fingers, not horrible ones.

Your nail is made up of many things your matrix being one of them and thats found under the skin just behind the cuticle this is where your nail cells are produced and they are a white opaque colour, here they get flattened and are then pushed out to form the nail plate as they are pushed out they go translucent.
Sometimes though they don't flatten properly and so they stay the opaque white colour and so when pushed out onto the nail you get your half moon (lunula) it doesnt mean anything if you've got them or you havent it's just un-flattened nail cells

One of my rats won't leave my finger nails alone!?
I feel really bad for one of my rats. She doesn't get to crawl on me very much because she won't leave my finger nails alone for 2 minutes! What are the white lines on my finger nails?
I have white/lighter lines running paralell to the tip of my nails just above the white bit everyone has at the tip, they wont grow out. I dont know what they are. I recently had blood tests for all my vital functionjs and they were ok, apart from a border line underactive thyroid. I am also been treated for anxiety am currently on beta blockers. I have had many ECG's and seen a cardiologist who said my heart looks and sounds fine. Any one got any ideas?

Its safe as most poster paints are water based and non-toxic. but it might not stay on too well. You would have to let it dry completely and quickly apply a topcoat to get to hold.

So my partner and i have been trying to conceive for 2 months now.
I started taking Folic acid, and Calcium 2 months ago.
I have noticed in the last 3 weeks that my finger nails are STRONG (not breaking or peeling). I have had weak nails my whole life.
Do you think this is due to the folic acid or the calcium or a mixture of both? What an added extra bonus.
Can i take folic acid for the rest of my life? or is it a bit dangerous?Have any of you ladies noticed stronger finger nails since taking folic acid.?
PreNatal vitamins will definitely effect your hair, skin, nails etc.
I was also taking PreNatals for 3 weeks and then stopped. I could see when my nails grew out longer that there was a distinct difference in my nail bed %26amp; nail strength.
You are perfectly safe taking PreNatals as a daily vitamin for as long as you want. (Otherwise how could it be safe for pregnant women taking it for almost a year?)
I've heard it suggested that all women should take PreNatal vitamins as their Daily MultiVitamin (as long as it's safe %26amp; unless contraindicated by their Doctor.)
I'm going back to taking them too!

If you want other supplements that will help with nail growth, try the herb Horsetail. Or take a good prenatal vitamin. They are necessary for any woman trying to conceive, and a good choice for a woman, pregnant or not.
When i was pregnat and taking the vitamins my hair was better, nails grow faster and stronger. Id say its more from the calcium but then again i drink tons of whole milk and i dont have the luck anymore so it could be both. Id say look that up on the web.
I know penty of woman who take prenatals just for the benefits of better hair and nails. I think there is more daily needs met with prenatals vs day to day vitamins. I could be wrong.

Why/how do u push back your finger nails?
I was reading through the previous questions and some people said that you push it back to make it appear longer which totally confused me because if you push it back then won't it be shorter???

The small thin piece of skin at the base of the nail is called your cuticle...the tool used in nail salons i believe is called a cuticle pusher, and it's primary use is to push the skin further down to prevent hangnails. (the little flaps of skin you get on the side of your nails that can get irritating or sometimes bleed if you try and peel them off). and the tool on fingernail clippers, the blunt and curved, is for scooping underneath your nails to clean out any dirt you may have. hope i helped,Why/how do u push back your finger nails?

hello evryone, before you all call me a woman let me explain
well my mom is 33 years old and weighs 162 pounds. she understands she is overweight but there is another concern that she has been looking at lately.
her finger nails are starting to grow very strange. if you look at the side of her fingernail (not the top) you would see it is growing very crooked. not as in bent in a weird way. but it looks like a bump sorta. and it has a dent in it in the middle. im trying to explain as best as i can
its not a growth, the bump is just the normal part of her nail only it is starting to bulge out and feels like a smooth bump. yes she is stressed and overweight.
she is not eating very well and sleeps alot. she sleeps about 2 hours straight, even 3 sometimes. she works alot with chemicals, such as bleach and dis-infectants because her job is house cleaning, a.k.a house caring.
please help because she has taken alot of concern during this week and she is already stressed out enough. another thing is that it is on the lunula part of her nail, the pinkish stuff.

Ok, my mom has naturally really long, like 2 centimeters long I got bored one day, and I decided to grow up my index finger nails. They got to be like a centimeter and a half. Lots of people have seen them, and no one reacted to them in a negative way. I keep them nice and filed up. The last day of school, there was a waterballoonn fight, and there was a 10% change of theballoonn popping in my own hand thanks to the nails, I asked my friend if I should at east cut the nail in my throwing hand, and he said, 'Naww, just be extra careful';. Heck, another friend of mine admires these nails. And some bully came up to me one day and he said ';Woah, look at the size of those nails';. I mean I get nonegative feedback.
So, I always file them up, but do you think its weird that I let grow my index finder nails long? (Both index fingers)

In my opinion, it is odd that you leave just index nails to grow. But if you like then it shouldn't matter what others think!

Look carefully at your fingernails.. How much white semi-cirlce u have? When i was very young my mother who is a nurse told me that the more the white thing the more healthy u are.
And i really agree, coz when i'm sick, the white thing becomes very little, yet after i recover it becomes more again.

i do. i used to be a worry wart(that when it started) and now it's bad habit that i can't stop. i do it without thinking i know i'm doing it but when ever i try to stop bt my heads like ';its a hang nail get it of'; or ';it si so rigid smooth it out'; and i always make it worse its beem 9 years.Why do you think people bite their finger nails down to the bone?
I've bitten my nails down to the quick, but never to the bone. I think I'd have to be rather stressed to reach that stage.
I am guilty as charged. I have always done it because I'm a nervous wreck all the time and it's a coping mechanism. Grody I know.
I hate it it is totally disgusting. Why would you want to chew on your dirty finger nails just think about all the things you touch in a day.
I do it, not to the bone, it's bad nerves and lots of stress.

Just to look at their fingers I have to turn away. Their nails look so bad. Here it looks like no more nail could be bitten, and they are still biting away. Yuck! That is so awful. It's always something, isn't it?Why do you think people bite their finger nails down to the bone?
i do. i used to be a worry wart(that when it started) and now it's bad habit that i can't stop. i do it without thinking i know i'm doing it but when ever i try to stop bt my heads like ';its a hang nail get it of'; or ';it si so rigid smooth it out'; and i always make it worse its beem 9 years.Why do you think people bite their finger nails down to the bone?

Sounds like your nails are weak. Drink more milk, eat more cheese, anything with alot of calcium. This is the most important part. If your body doesn't absorb calcium well, eat foods that will help absorb calcium. (That one must ask YAHOO! Answers, I oso dunno.)
Try not to use or immerse your nails in water for too long. This dries out the nails. Use gloves when washing dishes.

get acrylic nails? you won't be able to bite them heh. If you don't want to pay for that then constantly paint your nails, nail polish doesn't taste good. You could try dipping your fingers in something that smells strong like garlic for example but you probably don't want to smell like garlic either. i tried to stop with the nasty tasting clear nail polish, the only problem with that is you get used to the taste after awhile and don't even notice. anyways, i'm now just trying to stop by noticing when i'm doing it and stopping my self, sometimes i just bite one nail only, but i paint them a lot and that helps because i don't want to ruin them. um, i also chew gum a lot and that keeps me busy lol. i hope that helps.

I personally don't recommend the hot sauce because I'm used to eating spicy things and normal nailpolish DOES NOT work! Also, never try the ';rubber band on your wrist'; thing, its eventually gonna leave you marks on your wrist which in my opinion are worse that ragged nails. Try not to stress, even though it can be impossible at times. And if that doesn't work, I suggest you use a nail strengthening polish daily. They come in clear (sally hansen) and do wonders for strengthening your nails. When your nails are stronger it is harder to bite them off. You actually can get to a point where the only way to bite the nail off is if you focus on biting... which since you want to stop biting, you will realize that you are doing it and stop.

About a year ago, my cuticles and fingernails changed dramatically. I have always had tendancies towards horizontal bumps in my thumbnails and fingernails that would sort of curl down in places...but there have been long periods of time where they were long, beautiful and perfect. But a year ago, they started getting thick vertical ridges, some even splitting vertically. My thumbnails now have thick and thin places that seem to come from horizontal bumps...they are really weird. I also have these bubble like things in one thumbnail that actually peels in the middle of it, and a vertical ridge in the same spot can even cause it to split vertically in the middle of the nail. I must have some deficiency or something. Perhaps low thyroid? It has gotten worse...and my cuticles are super thick now and I have less feeling in them. I even have to trim them with clippers because they get so thick all around my nail bed and the sides. let me guess, your cuticles aren't only thick, but extremely dry as well? so dry they crack sometimes and you have to trim them off?
I've always been told its just my eczema and it's actually under the nail in the nailbed. I know that ridges in the nails can mean a deficiency - i think either zinc or keratin from orange vegetables like carrots and red/orange peppers.
i have not yet found a way to get rid of it.
I also take a few corticosteroids for asthma/allergies...i've been on corticosteroids for as long as i can remember, and my nails have also been the way they are as long as i can remember.
So, i don't really have an answer for why it's happening...but if you have eczema/psoriasis and/or you're on corticosteroids, maybe that's it.
What i do to hide it is just file and buff my nails. Right on the bed of the nail. The trick is not filing too much because, like you said, there are thin spots.
sometimes when the thin spots get really bad i get press on nails. I only put glue around the edges of the nail so that i dont run the risk of breaking the thin spot. That at least offers protection because they get VERY sensetive to the touch.
if you find any similarities in my story, let me know. I've been trying to figure this one out too, and doctors have been no help at all.

I've always been told its just my eczema and it's actually under the nail in the nailbed. I know that ridges in the nails can mean a deficiency - i think either zinc or keratin from orange vegetables like carrots and red/orange peppers.
i have not yet found a way to get rid of it.
I also take a few corticosteroids for asthma/allergies...i've been on corticosteroids for as long as i can remember, and my nails have also been the way they are as long as i can remember.
So, i don't really have an answer for why it's happening...but if you have eczema/psoriasis and/or you're on corticosteroids, maybe that's it.
What i do to hide it is just file and buff my nails. Right on the bed of the nail. The trick is not filing too much because, like you said, there are thin spots.
sometimes when the thin spots get really bad i get press on nails. I only put glue around the edges of the nail so that i dont run the risk of breaking the thin spot. That at least offers protection because they get VERY sensetive to the touch.
if you find any similarities in my story, let me know. I've been trying to figure this one out too, and doctors have been no help at all.

Her palms bleed sometimes her finger nails go so far in ?
Alright one of my best friends, she gets these HORRIBLE nightmares, sometimes she doesn't remember what they where she Just knows they scared her shitless, other times she remembers %26amp; its from past child hood experiences. She kicks %26amp; flails around %26amp; makes weird noises, half the time she ends up hurting herself like smacking her arms off of bed side tables or so on %26amp; gets bruises, it doesn't usually stop her sleeping, nor does she dread sleeping to much, she goes to bed willingly , also sometimes during these she shoves her finger nails so far into her palm that it either leaves marks , bruises, scratches, or makes them bleed. How does she manage that ? I myself tried (like the jackas s I am) to see how she could possibly do that, I pushed as hard as I possibly could %26amp; left deep marks but they faded rather quickly. How does she manage this ? Also , I have never had a real nightmare in my life so can someone fill me in about them , how in the world she started getting them, it hasn't gone on forever but it started abruptly %26amp; wont stop, what causes you to have nightmares this bad? How can I help her ? Thank you!
P.s.: waking her up does nothing, if you wake her up first off shes pissed at you, but then when she goes to sleep once again, they come back.Her palms bleed sometimes her finger nails go so far in ?

well, i bite my nails a lot when i get nervous and bored and right now i have my nails in a really bad shape. so i was wondering if i could buy fake nails to glue on, just the little plain ones and only put the glue on the top of my nails so it doesn't get in the way of me growing my nails while i cover them up for a while becasue they look bad.
i don't think a nail place will help with my problems so i just wanted to know if doing this was okay while my nails grow?

dont go to a nail salon cos acrylic nails will ruin them - i had fake nails for about 6 months and it took a year for them to become strong again.
just put the stuff on your nails to stop you from biting and let it grow naturally, then go to a nail salon to get it shaped and/or a manicure
There's a polish called Jessica ';Nibble no more'; which could help.
You just apply it like you usually would with nail varnish, and it has an unpleasant taste/smell, so it'll stop you from biting every time you go near your nails! Just research the web for ';Nail biting solutions'; if this doesn't work.

fake nails wont stop your nails from growing (no matter how much glue you use)... but after your nails start to grow the fake nails wont cover the whole nail and you will see more of the nail by the cuticle... when u take the fake nails off it may ruin your nails underneath though because you have to rip them off

He's had dreams with razor-toothed people eating his toes and some night I've woken up to him screaming. Have her take some B1 vitamins and a calcium/magnesium blend before she goes to bed. I know I rarely got nightmares when I took them. You can get B1 in most vitamin aisles and you can search calmag up on the internet. It does wonders and it's natural, not a whole bunch of mind altering drugs.

How to look after finger nails which I used to bite but don't really grow back?!?
I used to bite my finger nails all the time but now I have promised my self that I won't. I got a manacure for a friedns b'day party and they ladies couldnt really cut them down at all but now eventhough I want to grow them, they don't seem to be coming back. When they do grow back though, and get long, the top of the nail tends to bend back and detatch itself from the rest of the nail.

theres nail lengthener that goes on like normal nail polish in a clear coat that is healthy for them that you can find at beauty stores but if you dont have time or money to buy that then just off everything on your nails currently and moisturize the tips to the root of the nail with a lotion and dont bite!!!!

It is an idea to go to a Nail Technician (not the cheap nail bars) and have either Acrylics or Gel Nails put on, it seems as though you may have damaged your nail beds, and this will continue to happen until they repair themselves, so I would suggest the Acrylics, and continue to get them filled every 2/3 weeks, they also condition your nails with special oils at the end of the treatment, and will give you advice.

Its been almost 4 months now and I think its so awesome that I now have nails. It took me almost 30 years to break my habit but I did it. My only problem now is every nail is kicking butt. They are strong and long. But for some reason my index finger nails and my thumb nails just will not grow. Is it possible that I damaged them so much that now they wont grow?

Hi, Ive come to realise that my thumb nails are in a bit of a state. I bite my nails often and the nail on the thumb is getting quite flat (rather than rounded like a normal nail) and has some ridges down it. My question is: Are there any particular methods to return my nails to a normal shape and form? Obviously its a good idea to start by not biting them, but Ive done that before and it doesn't seem to rectify the bad nail???

Well I use to bite my nails too, and what I would do is cut it back into it's normal shape with a pair of nail clippers. But you should really stop, your nails have dirt under it and that can cause diseases/infections once your nails enters your mouth.

How to cure splitting finger nails?
So, I used to be a cronic nail biter. A few years ago I started having jell tips put on and now, having kicked the biting habit, grow my nails naturally. My problem is about five of my fingernails split at the ends (the top layer kinda chips off and peels). Is there any way to correct this?
When it happens, I either snip the nail to below the split or file the top down and put some clear coat on but it always happens again! Why did some of my finger nails turn completely (or almost) white right after taking off acrylic nails?
For the first time about 8 months ago, I got my nails done professionally (acrylic tips). I ripped them off a little after a month with no chemicals. They were very weak and thin for a while and then they started to hurt like a bruise and then eventually some of the nails turned all white and some half way. They are very tender to the touch and have been this way for a while. Is this a deficiency or did I do this? What can I do to get my nails back to normal?Why did some of my finger nails turn completely (or almost) white right after taking off acrylic nails?
Generally, nails become white due to deficiency of calcium. I think you should consult your physician, if this is the case. If indeed calcium is your problem, you should consider diet with high calcium like milk, vegetables or supplements. Or something similar that you put on like nail varnish/polish? I use a moisturizer sometimes, I think it's by skin so sensitive or skin so soft or something like that, the logo has 3 'S's on and it's pink, it says for hands and nails/. Maybe you could try that. Or if the problem persists just make a doctors appointment, they should be able to tell you what's wrong and prescribe something good =)

i'm not totally sure how to answer your question exactly..
but as for just growing nails in general.. try taking prenatal vitamins.. the ones pregnant women take.. they help your nails to grow quickly and nicely..
it worked for me.. and you can get a bottle for under five dollars at walmart..
you could also try those various nail growing polishes and junk.. but i think the vitamins would help more..

Let them grow, don't clip then so short and don't bite them. Eat jello, it makes them stronger. Also taking pre-natal vitamins can make your nails stronger. There are nail polishes that claim to make them grow faster, but I've never found them to work. So just leave them alone and let them grow as long as you want. But be sure once they start chipping or something to file them or trim them just a tiny bit, kind of like what you do with hair once you start getting split ends.
the nails in the first picture look very thick so i would assume they resembled the thickness of your own nails so i won't recommend taking a vitamin e supplement. however, applying a clear coat can protect your nails from the environment and sort of baby them so they have a better chance to grow, also filing the skin around the nail down helps.

Why do my finger nails curve?
Not all of them do it, but I have a couple of finger nails that curve when they grow out. Like, as they grow, instead of growing out like my other nails, they curve around the tip of my finger. I cant even let them grow more than about 1/16th of an inch because thats when it gets very noticable that they are curving around the tip of my finger, and if they get much longer than that, like at about 1/8th inch, they are well curved over the tip of my finger, and any longer than that gets in my way.
